Facebook Launches Oculus Quest, a New All-in-One VR System for $399

 

This week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced at Oculus Connect 5 (OC5) that they will launch their newest headset, called “Oculus Quest” for shipping in the upcoming spring of 2019 for $399. Oculus Quest is considered to be Oculus VR’s first all-in-one VR system that provides six degrees of freedom and Touch controllers.

According to this VR device “Oculus Quest”, gamers now able to jump right into the action without any need to  PC, wires, and external sensors, in addition to allowing them to walk through virtual space just as they would in the physical world. It should be kept in mind that Oculus VR is a division of Facebook Inc., released on March 28, 2016. Oculus initiated a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to fund the Rift’s development, after being founded as an independent company two months prior.

According to this VR device “Oculus Quest”, gamers are now able to jump right into the action without any need for PC, wires, and external sensors, in addition to allowing them to walk through virtual space just as they would in the physical world. As explained by Oculus in its announcement on an official post blog, Oculus Quest provides gamers around the world with several virtual options and features, that make them enjoy the virtual reality, such as:

  1. Oculus Quest is Offering six degrees of freedom and Touch controllers.
  2. It can effectively work with no PC, no wires, and no external sensors.
  3. Additionally, it also will introduce over 50 games and experiences at launch, with even more in the works including some of the popular Rift games like Robo RecallThe Climb, and Moss.
  4. With Oculus Quest’s Touch controllers, users’ hands will be brought into VR and they can easily and naturally interact with the world around them.
  5. Oculus Quest headset pricing starts at $399 USD for a 64GB headset.
  6. It also provides convenience and portability.
  7. Oculus Quest includes the same best-of-class optics as Oculus Go with a display resolution of 1600×1440 per eye while incorporating a lens spacing adjustment to help maximize visual comfort, as reported by Oculus.
  8. Oculus Quest also will come with high-quality built-in audio, in order to provide users with immersive sound with even deeper bass.

 

In the same announcement, Oculus also mentions its Oculus Insight, that’s a breakthrough technology, which supports inside-out tracking, Guardian, and Touch controller tracking. Oculus Insight is based on four ultra-wide-angle sensors and computer vision algorithms, in order to discover users’ exact position in real time without any external sensors. Oculus added that; “Insight gives you a greater sense of immersion, presence, and mobility, plus the ability to go beyond room-scale. And we’ve brought over Guardian to help keep you safer while in VR. It’s easy to setup and experience whenever you want.”

Finally, Oculus VR said that; “Oculus Quest has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. Oculus Quest is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased until authorization is obtained.” 

On the other hand, we should underline that Oculus Connect is one of the Facebook events, which are held annually. It gathers VR developers, creators, and thought leaders to share insights, get hands-on with the latest tech demos and experiences, and reimagine the possibilities of the medium.
